A regrettable case for the Lepidopterology caused by a dipterist -
a report on an article, published in an University Journal in Turkey

Ahmet Omer Kocak *

Recently, an article entitled "Tephritidae in Turkey an evaluation of its status from various
standpoints (Diptera)" was published by Kogak & Kemal (2013). 2 Authors determined there three
important cases in the Dipterology: "plagiarism [1], misappropriation of the academic concepts,
such as authorship [2], and supervisor [3] in the Dipterology". Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kiitiik (Gaziantep
University, Turkey) played an important role on these subjects as supervisor. Dr. Kiitiik, is a
dipterist, specialized on the family Tephritidae. Several years ago, he carried an academic
responsibility, as supervisor of the MSc thesis of H. U. Aytekin in the same University. Regretfully,
the thesis has serious ethical problems, although it is accepted as a successful thesis by the Higher
Education Council of Turkey. After the acceptance of the thesis by the Council, Assoc. Prof. Dr.
Kiitiik plays his other role as "author" of the following so-called academic, scientific article:

Aytekin,H.U. 3 & M. Kiitiik, 4 2011. Determination of the Crambidae (Lepidoptera:
Pyraloidea) Gaziantep Province. Kafkas Univ. Inst. Nat. Appl. Set J. 4 (1): 9-16. 5

Several parts of this article are given below with explanations and comments (Figs. 1-4).

Abstract

Thi* study based on the Crarnbidae (Lepidoptera: Pyraloidea) samples collected from Gaziantep
province of Turkey in the spring and summer* of 2QG9 : 2010 and 2011 year*. In this study. 15
species belonging to 14 genera were recorded from 5 subfamilies of Ciambidae. Zo olographic
distribution, host plant*, male and female genitalia figures are given for the*e specie*.

Fig. l - The article is written by two authors: first one is also owner the MSc thesis, the second
person M.Kiitiik is the supervisor. First author has no chance to correspond with anybody; this
right belongs to M.Kiitiik through his e-mail, as always. In the abstract, it is stated: "male and
female genitalia are given for these species".

responsible from this article.

Mdl 1-6: Cramhidae seoitalyapjlaii: l-Agtiphila fi-isiella ({J, 5), 2-,-bmma luctalis (o, + ),

3- Aporodes floralis (q, 2}, 4- Ulajryrasfra makicellus (J. 2), 5- Cvnaedd rfenfaifj (J, £), 6- Qnaato Ji^perba

Fig. 3 - The most vital part of this article is the illustrations and their explanations. In this part,
Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Kiitiik explains the male and female genitalia of six crambid species, as
illustrated and noted by symbols, (to be continued)

It is clear that Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Kiitiik has no scientific information about the male
genitalia of a lepidoptera species. I dare say that none of these illustrated genitalia has been
prepared by M. Kiitiik himself. It is understood that M. Kiitiik decided desperately the larger part
of the genitalia as "male", smaller part as "female genitalia" (Figs. 3,4). The smaller one of the
genitalia of each species illustrated is scientifically called as "aedeagus", the most important part of
the male genitalia during copulation. But M.Kiitiik, as dipterist, calls it as "female genitalia",
instead of "aedeagus" of the male. In other words, if the species is a mammal, his "penis" is the
female genital organ, according to Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Kiitiik's scientific opinion.

Thus, M.Kiitiik brought a new vision to the science, based upon his "magical" knowledge.
And this "idea", in a very important, scientific and academic article (!) has been published in an
"serious" journal of Kafkas University in Turkey. As supervisor, unfortunately, Assoc. Prof. Dr. M.
Kiitiik has been continuing to product new pollutions in science. For the time being, Tephritidae
(in the order Diptera), Pyralidae, Crambidae, Geometridae (in the order Lepidoptera) have been
heavily infected, thanks to Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Kiitiik's scientific vision.

Finally, authorities and reviewers of "Kafkas University, Institute of Natural and Applied
Science Journal" are equally responsible for this pollution in science. Moreover, Turkish text of this
article grammatically incorrect in some sentences. Separately, Rules of the Journal have not been
applied for the references of Kiitiik's article.

Fig. 4 - (concluded from fig.3). In this part, Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Kiitiik explains the male and
female genitalia of the rest of the crambid species, as illustrated and noted by symbols [except figs.
10-12].

Now, I urgently invite all the scientists (especially Dr. W. Speidel) to write their comments
on this so-called scientific article, and their so-called scientists, to the following responsible
offices:

Every serious message, I believe, will be helpful to a scientific environment around us,
cleaner, more ethical, and richer in correct information.

I cannot keep silent in the face of this situation, and never participate by excusing, in the
massacre of the knowledge.
